We blew past this weblog’s 100th post sometime between passing out drunk at 1 a.m. last night and waking up at 6:30 this morning to find a very early New Pornographers show posted online. Once I realized I didn’t do anything to celebrate this milestone, I figured I’d string together a greatest hits-style retrospective.
Before that, a little history, however. Because I wasn’t sure when I started this site in August what I was going to be doing with it, I originally just called it “Tony’s Weblog.” I wrote a brief “About” page with a little picture of me in Las Vegas last year at my brother’s wedding. (Now THAT was a good drunk! Four days, about six hours of sleep and 20-some hours of blackjack …)
After posting a couple of entries and clips, I invited a few friends to check it out and give feedback. Tim suggested a really random name and offered “Pedantic Xylophone,” probably in jest. I thought about it and shortened it to “X-log” (now just “X”) because I thought naming my blog after a musical instrument would create some unconscious pressure to write about music exclusively.
Since then, though, it’s been non-stop, hot-and-heavy blog-on-blog action. For you new readers, here are some posts that might help you get caught up.
First entry: All My Friends Are Atheists (with a kickass first comment from Tim)
The first and only love song I’ve ever written: What We Should Talk About
The Silver Jews posts (so far): #1 – “People” #2 – “The Wild Kindness” #3 – “The Frontier Index” (a request from Kyle) #4 – “Inside the Golden Days of Missing You”
The football season started: Steelers Week
A eulogy I wish I’d given in person: Larger than Life
I found out that I was moving to Pittsburgh: Going Places
I started a new job: One in the Books
I exposed my deepest, darkest secret: True Confessions
I listened to a lot of Okkervil River: It’s Just a Life Story
Most recently, I gave some advice: Rules for a Good Drunk
There’s a bunch more tucked in-between, but this is probably as good a start as any.
Hope you had fun. I did.
